Eastside MFM
Patients known to be at risk for preterm delivery are assessed individually. Patients with prior preterm delivery have a 6 to 90% chance of recurrence depending upon the initial inciting event as well as characteristics unique to the mother and her health. The perinatologist will perform a formal consultation where patient’s prior records and history will be discussed. A management plan for the pregnancy will then be formulated. Many patients are co-managed with their referring obstetrician; in circumstances where the patient is at extremely high risk, she may become a primary MFM private patient. A combination of education by our nursing staff and physicians about signs and symptoms of preterm labor and risk factors for preterm birth, physical and ultrasound exam of the cervix, uterus, and baby, biochemical screening through fibronectin and cervico-vaginal cultures, and medical treatment are the mainstays of our program. Many patients without prior history are evaluated as risk identification occurs; hospitalized and ambulatory patients are often treated urgently at the request of the referring provider. Continuity of care, involvement of the patient in her care, and close relations with our support services and neonatology program offer individualized treatment meeting each family’s needs.
