Nuchal translucency Patient Brochure (pdf file that explains nuchal translucency screening)

Nuchal translucency screening involves the measurement by ultrasound of the skin thickness at the back of the neck of a first trimester fetus (seen on the left as the yellow area behind the baby).  Nuchal translucency thickness is directly related to the chance that the baby has Down Syndrome.

This is an ultrasound picture of a nuchal translucency measurement.
