Twin Program

The Multiples Program through Eastside MFM

Individualized family education and risk assessment is performed at an initial consultation and pregnancy ultrasound.

Educational materials and a resource booklet are given; specific nutritional recommendations are formulated that are unique to the patient and her pregnancy.

A team combining a nurse knowledgeable about multiples and prematurity prevention works closely with the perinatologist and a dietician.  Pregnancy ultrasound is performed every two to four weeks depending upon the trimester, the type of placenta(s), and maternal medical complications.

At each visit, the patient will meet with the physician who performs the ultrasound and evaluates the health of the babies and mother.

Fetal weights and maternal cervical exam are discussed at each visit.  Referrals to our genetic counselor, psychosocial support services, spiritual care, physical therapy and massage therapy, and neonatal nursery team are available.

Childbirth education continues through the Multiples Class, Childbirth Prep, and Lactation Support classes.

At each visit, a nurse performs further evaluation and education with close monitoring of patient’s weight gain, hematocrit, and individual needs.

The mother will track her data also, so that she is working in conjunction with the perinatal team and her obstetrician.  The perinatologist will order appropriate antepartum testing as needed and will guide the obstetrician with recommendations through pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum.  This program is available through both our Evergreen and Overlake offices.

For patients with the unique condition called Twin to twin transfusion syndrome, Evergreen has one of the few invasive fetal therapy programs in the country.  Dr. Martin Walker’s expertise allows us to consult and treat patients with this serious complication of monochorionic (identical twins sharing a placenta) twin pregnancy.  For more information about this program, contact our Nurse coordinator, Melissa Dorn: mdorn@echc.org.
